The term ‘Diatomaceous earth’ (DE) refers to a sedimentary mineral that result from the deposition of silica-rich unicellular life forms known as ‘diatoms’.
Diatoms are aquatic algae, and hence DE forms in water staying close to the surface where they form part of the abundant plankton in both salt and fresh water.
The cell walls of these dead diatoms consist of amorphous silica (SiO2.H2O). The fossilised skeletal remains (frustules) vary in size but are typically 10 to 200 microns across and have a broad variety of shapes..
